The widest gap between what a firm is worth and what it looks like online.
A builder with a twenty-year reputation, a full order book and a yard full of plant will routinely lose an enquiry to a two-year-old outfit with a tidier website, because the homeowner searching ‘loft conversion Crowborough’ has no way to tell them apart. On a project worth thirty or forty thousand pounds, that’s an expensive place to be invisible.
We’re a family-run agency in Heathfield, building websites since 1997, and we work with trades businesses across East Sussex. SEO for construction companies is mostly a structural problem rather than a writing one, which is why the fix below starts with how the site is organised. For Troy’s Trees and Hedge Services in Eastbourne, a tree surgery, grounds maintenance and fencing business, the site and the SEO behind it produced an 87% increase in traffic over the year and 25 leads and enquiries a month.
Nobody searches for ‘construction’.
They search for the job and the place. ‘Loft conversion Uckfield’. ‘Groundworks contractor East Sussex’. ‘Single storey extension cost’. ‘Barn conversion builder Wealden’. ‘Underpinning specialist near me’.
Which means a homepage saying ‘we undertake all aspects of building work’ matches none of them. It reads as competent to a human and as nothing in particular to a search engine. The firms winning these searches have a page for the job, and where it makes sense, a page for the job in the place.
Answer the cost question. Everyone else refuses.
The most searched construction questions are about money and permission. What a single-storey extension costs per square metre. Whether a loft conversion needs planning permission. How long building regulations approval takes. What a party wall agreement involves.
Almost every builder’s website refuses to go near these, on the reasonable grounds that every job is different. So the answers get written instead by national comparison sites and lead-generation companies, who then sell your enquiry back to you. Giving an honest range, with the things that move it, isn’t giving away a quote. It’s the strongest piece of content a construction firm can publish, it filters out the people who were never going to proceed, and it’s exactly the kind of page now being quoted in Google’s AI answers.
