Keep Things Relevant

One of the biggest factors in determining the value of an inbound link is relevance.

A link from a website that is connected to your industry, location or subject area is usually far more valuable than a link from a completely unrelated site. For example, if your website is about marketing, a link from a respected marketing publication, business organisation, local chamber of commerce or relevant client case study will usually be more useful than a random link from an unrelated directory.

This is straightforward to understand and may seem like common sense, but it is often overlooked. A backlink should feel natural. It should help the reader find something useful, not exist purely for SEO.

Associate With Authority And Trust

The authority and trustworthiness of the website linking to you is another important factor.

A link from a well-established, reputable website can carry much more weight than a link from a low-quality site with very little credibility. This might include respected industry websites, local business groups, professional bodies, news publications, suppliers, partners or clients.

That said, authority is not just about whether a website is old or large. A smaller, highly relevant website can still provide a valuable link if it is trusted by its audience and genuinely connected to what you do.

It is also worth being careful with links that look artificial. Buying links, joining link schemes or creating backlinks purely to manipulate rankings can go against Google’s spam policies. Use Anchor Text Correctly

Anchor text is the visible, clickable text that contains the hyperlink.

Using clear, descriptive anchor text helps both users and search engines understand what the linked page is about. Google’s own link guidance recommends using anchor text that is descriptive and useful, rather than vague or overly generic.

However, anchor text should still feel natural. Avoid forcing exact-match keywords into every link, as this can look spammy. A healthy backlink profile will usually include a mix of branded links, natural phrases, page titles and descriptive anchor text.
