Regular updates and new web pages are vital to keep potential customers revisiting you...

New clients Sway Allstars Orchestra are a London based band who have spent many years perfecting their skill.

They have played for some extremely high profile people, from the rich & famous to royalty from all over the world. Top of their game and a really great bunch of people.

We started chatting with them as they had a website but it wasn’t working for them. It had very little information on it and had not been updated for a while. They wanted to keep their website up to date, through search engines as well as social media, confirming that they really know what they are doing and to really showcase their amazing work.

What we are working on

So the guys at Sokada suggested a few changes which is already making a huge difference to the number of visitors coming to and finding their website:

  1. We transferred it into WordPress, which is an ideal platform for marketing a website
  2. We updated the home page, making it look more current and welcoming
  3. We made the navigation simple, showing potential customers everything that the band does
  4. Added a blog – A definite necessity and just take a look at where they have been!
  5. Set their website up so we could actually see how many people are visiting them and the stats that Google Analytics gives
  6. We are in the process of adding new pages, showcasing the type of work synonymous to Sway Allstars Orchestra
  7. We have added a gallery – they have so many photographs of where they have been, who they have sung for and what they have done that we had to show it off!
  8. We are being consistent with their social media, regularly updating Facebook an Twitter and finding new people to follow the band
  9. We now write regular blogs for them, based on some of the amazing gigs they have done
  10. We are also going to break down the line-ups for the band as they offer so many variables

Many of the businesses we design for really struggle on how to write great website content. They want to find the words that will attract their potential buyer, be unique, but they also don’t necessarily want or know how to write it themselves!

Content can be a challenge

As a web design company, this is probably one of the largest challenges for us, as well as our customers. They may be experts in their field, but writing interesting and compelling information for their customers can be a real challenge. This can sometimes make a newly designed website late in going live – the copy can sometimes be a real sticking point!

how to write great website contentThere must be enough text on the website to make it look professional when it is published on the internet – one paragraph on a page will look as though the customer has not bothered. It needs to have a decent amount of words, (at least 300) so that search engines will find the pages, index the website and bring potential customers to it.

Websites with technical information should not just be copied from another website. Obviously the specification must be accurate but text should always be individual to each business – Google will not like it if you use duplicate text and you will really struggle to get your website indexed effectively.

Don’t be tempted to steal information or text from other websites! You could be caught…

So where do you start?

  • Make notes and bullet points to get you started. Write some key points that you can then elaborate on.
  • Do keyword research – it is vital to pick the right terms for each page. That way you are half way there with regards to marketing your website!
  • Think about the titles you want on your website and how they will interact with your customers. This will then give you ideas on where to start writing.
  • Start to break down the above three points and write your information in more detail. If this is a point you find really hard, then a good website copywriter could help. They will be able to write effectively for a website and will know about keyword density as well as not “spamming” or “keyword stuffing” the copy. But have a go yourself first and see how you get on – you are the expert at what you do, after all!
  • Keep your paragraphs relatively short and to the point – don’t necessarily write one sentence and then drop down a line, but alternately, great long paragraphs will really make people switch off.
  • Break each page up with the sub-headers you have already thought about and make each one interesting. Don’t just use the main top title, with a huge amount of text underneath – break it down into more bite sized chunks!
  • Use images to show what you are selling. Make sure they are your own though….don’t forget copyright! Images and photographs can break up a page and make it more visually interesting, whether it is an online shop you have or a brochure website.
  • Make sure there are no spelling or punctuation mistakes – many people will be put off by this.
  • There is an optimum limit on the internet for page width and the way people’s eyes move over the page – ensure your website designer understands this.

Basically you need to write about what you know; your own products or services. You are understandably the best person to promote your business and your website must show this. However, not everyone is up to the job; you may be an expert in your own field, but writing good quality copy for a website can be a real challenge. It has all the information added to it that is relevant to your business, a great cover photo, a business logo, an enticing and snappy bio, a link to your website. So what’s next? Finding people who will follow and ultimately interact with you…and that can be a massive challenge.

When you are wanting to use it for business, then it isn’t necessarily the best idea to just have all your friends find you on Twitter. You now need to attract businesses and people who are going to find your tweets interesting, informative and useful for their business; eventually leading them to clicking onto your website and then becoming a prospect.

So here are some easy ways to gain new Twitter followers and just a few tips to get you started:

  • Make sure your bio has some good information about you and what you do. This is the first thing people will see about you so make it good. It is also what is displayed on Twitter’s Suggested Users page so it needs to have anything specific about you or your company. There is no point leaving it blank or trying to be too clever – it needs to show what you do.
  • Ensure your Twitter Links are all over your online presence. Include it on Facebook, your website, LinkedIn, your blog and any other media presence you have. Always make sure it is on your email signature, along with your website address.
  • Add a link to your business cards. Then whenever you hand one out it will be there for all to see.
  • If you give presentations, then ensure there is a page within your presentation that always includes all links relevant to you. Make it easy for people to find you.
  • Pictures are great and always make your tweets stand out and become more noticeable – so always try and add a picture or photograph. Make sure it’s one of your own though!
  • Always use a #hashtag for your key words. This will help to gain new followers who are interested in what you are tweeting about.
  • Find and follow people either in your industry or companies you would like to connect with. It could be the company profile or also staff or a director within the company.

    If you want to get into a new area, then do your research. Find out who you want to connect with and look them up on Twitter.

  • React to other tweets and make valuable comments of your own. Retweet their posts occasionally if it is something that is of interest to your company. Obviously don’t just retweet everything they post but you need to make them aware of you, so they follow you back. Start an interaction.
  • Encourage people to retweet your links. Then your tweets will be seen to a larger audience.
  • Always try and add a link to your website, whether it is to a blog post or specific page, or perhaps just the home page. Once you start to grow your twitter followers, this should help to increase visitors to your website.
  • Make an offer on Twitter, or perhaps a competition. Ask people to share it to win a prize or something worthwhile to them or their business. People love an offer!
  • Tweet as often as you can. Keep your name out there, but try and keep it businesslike and relevant. The more active you are, the more likely you are to gain more followers.
  • Make sure you engage with those who respond to you. Thank them or answer their questions – this all helps with the interaction. Don’t automate it though – no one likes an automated message!
  • Think about when you are going to tweet. Pick times and schedule posts when most people will be thinking about checking Twitter.
